Abstract

1477008 Coatings P P G INDUSTRIES Inc 2 Aug 1974 [3 Aug 1973] 34105/74 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] A substrate, e.g. high-density polyurethane foam, is coated with a curable thermosetting resin composition comprising (A) an ungelled OH-containing urethane reaction product of a polyisocyanate and a polyhydric material, (B) a thermosetting resin compatible with (A) and (C) a curing agent; where in (A), a major part of the polyhydric material is a linear polyester polyol formed from (1) an alcohol of average functionality #1.9, and (2) an acid component being C 2-20 carboxylic acid(s) or anhydride(s) of average functionality #1.9; #1 mole of compounds of functionality #3 being contained in 500 g polyhydric material. Curing agent (C) may be an aminoplast or phenolic resin, or it may be contained internally in resin (B). Resin (B) may be an alkyd, polyester polyol, polyurethane, or acrylic resin, e.g. an interpolymer of a monomer having a group with (a) an unsaturated amide, amido hydrogen being replaced by -RCHOR 1 , where R and R 1 are H or alkyl; or with (b) a cross-linked hydroxyalkyl ester of an ethylenically unsaturated acid, or (B) may be a cross-linking carboxyl polymer. (A) may include a polymer polyol of glass-transition temperature <50‹C. The composition may contain 2-50% wt (A). Conventional plasticizers may be incorporated. The components may be mixed in a solvent. Either heat or a catalyst is necessary for curing. Reference has been directed by the comptroller to Specification 1280404.
