Abstract

1476984 Colour television MATSUSHITA ELECTRIC INDUSTRIAL CO Ltd 10 June 1974 25693/74 Heading H4F Timing errors in a PAL colour television signal are cancelled by using a variable frequency oscillator 20 controlled by a phase comparator 21 receiving, via respective frequency converters 16, 19, the colour synchronizing bursts in the received signal and the output of the oscillator 20, the output of frequency converter 19 being fed to a frequency converter 22 which also receives the chrominance component of the received signal and produces a chrominance signal free from timing errors; a phase modulator 28 receiving, via an integrator 27, the output of phase comparator 21 is included between frequency converters 19 and 22 or in the output of frequency converter 22 or in one of the inputs to frequency converter 19. The apparatus may be used in a colour television receiver or, as shown, in playback apparatus receiving a signal played back from a magnetic tape, the received colour subcarrier frequency being 767 kHz. Crystal oscillator 17 operates at 3À58 MHz to provide from frequency converter 16 and burst gate 18 colour synchronizing bursts at 4À3 MHz subject to timing errors. Variable frequency oscillator 20 has a centre frequency of 767 kHz to produce from frequency converter 19 a signal, at 4À34 MHz subject to the same timing errors as the received signal, which is used to produce from frequency converter 22 a chrominance component having a subcarrier frequency of 3À58 MHz free from timing errors. Variable frequency oscillator 20 is controlled by an AFC circuit 25 receiving the horizontal synchronizing signal separated from the output signal by a circuit 24. In an alternative embodiment circuit 25 is omitted and an additional frequency converter (32, Fig. 11, not shown) is included between variable frequency oscillator 20 and frequency converter 19, the additional frequency converter (32) receiving an output from a further variable frequency oscillator (31) controlled by a further phase comparator (29) receiving the separated horizontal synchronizing signal from 24 and, via a frequency divider (30), the output of the further variable frequency oscillator (31).
