Abstract
1476609 Upgraded or reclaimed sand FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 17 Oct 1975 [16 Dec 1974] 42653/75 Heading C1A [Also in Division C3] The invention comprises an upgraded sand of pH 7À5-10À0, clay content no more than 0À1%, acid demand (as defined) no more than 15, a CaCO 3 content rendering no appreciable effervescence when 10 g. of sand is treated with 30 ml. of 50% HCl, moisture content no more than 0À25% and (CaO+MgO) content no more than 0À2%. Such sand is obtained by calcining new, raw or used (e.g. in foundry moulding) sand under suitable temperature and pressure conditions to convert clay on or in the sand to a friable material and to convert dolomite limestone to oxide (this step also removes resin); subjecting the product to severe agitation by scrubbing the grains against each other in a dry condition to burst or split the shell-like coating or glaze thereon; and separating and collecting the burst or split shells to leave upgraded sand. The starting sand may first be subjected to magnetic separation to remove ferrous impurities.
