Abstract
1476308 Making intercell connections for batteries LUCAS BATTERIES Ltd 15 Aug 1973 [25 Aug 1973] 40372/73 Heading H1B [Also in Division B3] In making an electrical connection between battery plates in an electric storage battery, extensions 14a, 15a on conductive bars 14, 15 connected to the plates are arranged parallel to an apertured partition wall, first and second welding electrodes 18, 19 which are movable together and which carry projections 21, 21 having part spherical or frusto conical end portions are located adjacent the extensions and the projections are caused to deform the extensions to engage one another through the aperture, current then being passed between the electrodes to melt the extensions. A battery box 11 moulded from polypropylene is divided into compartments by walls 12 and in each compartment a pack 13 of lead-acid battery plates and separators is arranged. In the compartments, other than the end ones, the sets of plates are connected to lead alloy bars 14, 15 each provided with an extension 14a, 15a on opposite sides of a partition wall having a hole 12a therein. Each intercell connection is made by placing the welding electrodes 18, 19, on opposite sides of a wall with the projections 21 in engagement with the extensions 14a, 15a in alignment with the hole 12a. Current is passed after the projections have forced the extensions to meet within the hole, thus melting the ex tensions to join them and <seal the hole 12a. When all intercell connections are complete the box is welded to a thermoplastic lid by heat and pressure. The projections on the electrodes may be part spherical or may be formed of two frusto conical portions 22a, 22b, Fig. 5.
