Abstract
1475764 Fuel elements UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 17 Nov 1975 [20 Nov 1974] 50245/74 Heading G6C A nuclear fuel assembly comprises a tubular cladding 2 divided transversely into a plurality of intercommunicating fuel compartments filled with fission-product-retaining, nuclear fuel particles 5 by longitudinally spaced, apertured tube plates 4, and a number of tubes 3, 10 and 11 for coolant flow supported parallel to one another and fixed to a common tube plate 4 which is secured to the cladding 2, selected ones 13 of the tubes 3 constituting support means for the tube plates and having perforated sleeves 8 extending coaxially between adjacent tube plates 4. The walls of the coolant tubes 3, 13 have perforations 6. In the particular embodiment described, the coolant tubes are fixed within holes in the uppermost tube plate (4a) (Figs. 1 and 5A, not shown) and extend freely through the other tube plates 4 including the lowermost tube plate (4b) (Figs. 1 and 58, not shown). The coaxial sleeves 8 have bearing flanges 8a which abut and may be welded to adjacent tube plates 4. To avoid masking the holes 6 in the coolant tubes 13, the coaxial sleeves 8 have larger diameter perforations 9. The outer row of coolant tubes includes semicircular ducts 10 having a flat side fitting flush against the inside face of the cladding 2 while at the comers of the cladding 2 smaller diameter tubes 11 are employed. Longitudinal ribs 12 are machined on the inside face of the cladding 2 and at the appropriate axial positions slots are cut across the ribs and serve to locate the edges of the tube plates 4. The cladding 2 in this embodiment comprises six corner sections 20<SP>-</SP> and six side panels 21, and is hexagonal in section. Alternatively, the cladding may be formed from a one-piece polygonal section tube.
