Abstract
1475541 Polyurethane foams IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 30 Dec 1974 [29 Jan 1974] 4073/74 Heading C3R Polyurethane foams are manufactured by a process which comprises reacting an organic polyisocyanate with a liquid polyester polyol which is a condensation product of at least one polyol and a mixture of glutaric, adipic and succinic acids containing from 5-95% wt. of glutaric acid in the presence of a blowing agent. Suitable polyols are ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, tetramethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, decamethylene glycol, glycerol, trimethylolpropane and pentaerythritol. Preferred polyisocyanates are aromatic polyisocyanates. The reaction mixture may also contain conventional ingredients such as catalysts, e.g. tertiary amines and organic tin compounds, cross-linking or chain lengthening agents, e.g. triethanolamine, ethylene glycol and m-phenylene diamine; flame retardants, e.g. tris haloalkylphosphates; and fillers, e.g. polyvinyl chloride. Suitable blowing agents are water and inert volatile liquids, e.g. halohydrocarbons. The density of the foamed product may be modified by foaming the reaction mixture in a closed mould having a volume less than that which would be occupied by the resultant foam if the reaction mixture were allowed to rise freely. In the examples microcellular elastomers are prepared by reacting 4,41-diphenylmethane-diisocyanate with a mixture consisting of 1,4- butane-diol, water, an amine catalyst and a polyester prepared from adipic acid, glutaric acid or anhydride, succinic acid or anhydride, and ethylene glycol and casting the foaming mixture into a mould at 50‹ C. the volume of which is half the volume which the product would have occupied if free rise had been allowed. The product is cured at ambient temperature.
