Abstract

147,539. Myard, F. E. June 25, 1919, [Convention date]. Drilling-machines.-In a machine for drilling metal sheets or plates, a number of tools are fed separately or at the same time transversely over the work simultaneously with an equal number of locating plungers which move over a perforated pattern so that the work may be drilled at positions corresponding to the perforations in the pattern, the work being given a longitudinal feed for successive rows of holes. In the machine shown, which is described as a punching machine but which may be constructed as a drilling machine, two series of punches p<3>, locating plungers d<3>, and dies p with axes in alinement are carried on two sets of slides D, E, F, and D<1>, E<1>, F<1> introduced into the machine through an aperture in the frame A, which is closed by a cover C in which the operating shafts and rods are mounted. Each set of slides at will is simultaneously traversed over the pattern M<1> or work T by a set of screws 1, 2, 3, the screws of each set being connected by a separate set of bevel gears, D<2>, E<2>, F<3>, D<8>, E<8>, F<8> to one of a pair of shafts 8 carrying double friction cones 8<1>. The friction cones are moved axially by hand levers L or L<1> to engage one or other of the friction cones 36, 37 on shafts 6, 7 respectively, which are rotated in opposite directions by spur gear 6<1>, 7<1> and bevel gear k<6>, k from the main shaft K. The lever L, Fig.. 2, is carried by a shaft 50 having a grooved sleeve L<2> so that rotation of the shaft by the lever raises or lowers the cone 8<1> through a fork L<3>. The shafts 8 may also be rotated by hand wheels V<8>. The locating plunger d<3> is normally held in raised position by springs d<2> but is pressed down to gauge its position relatively to a hole in the pattern by a crank d carried by a square shaft 4, which is rotated through arms l<5>, l<4> by raising the lever L when in its central positon. When the plunger and hole are in alinement the lever is pressed down to connect a claw clutch E<3> on the main shaft to an eccentric e. which through rollers e' forces down a spring- returned punch slide e<2> to effect the punching operation. The clutch is operated, on pressing down the lever, by a rod 40, connected by links 41, 42, 43 to a square shaft 5 carrying a bevel pinion e<7>, which meshes with a bevel pinion 39 on a shaft 38 carrying a pair of bell-crank levers e<3> connected to the clutch sleeve. Rollers e<4> on the ends of the levers are held against the punch slide until the end of one revolution of the main shaft when the clutch is released by springs. Each end of the work T and pattern M<1> is secured by pivoted jaws P, P<1> to a longitudinally movable frame N, N<1> moving in grooves in work-supporting rollers and having racks N<2> meshing with one of a. number of pairs of pinions N<2> mounted on parallel shafts and rotated by bevel gear from a shaft 14, which is operated either by a hand wheel 46 or by bevel gear and reversing friction gear 21, from the shaft 7, the friction cones 21 being controlled by a hand lever L<7>. The jaws P, P<1> are closed by cam arms 27, Fig. 7, on rods 17 and their pivots are adjusted equally on opposite sides of the transverse axis of the machine, so that the jaws do not coincide with holes in the pattern, by right and left handed screws g<1> which are simultaneously rotated by bevel gear n<2>, n<3>, n<1>, n<4> from a hand operated shaft 16. At each end of the plate and pattern are also arranged lateral pairs of guides S<1> adjusted by right and left hand screws 11 operated by hand-wheels 29 so that the plate and pattern may be arranged centrally of the machine. Auxiliary rolls are provided to support the pattern. The punch and die are centred in their holders by securing them thereto by conically recessed nuts p<2> engaging similar coned surfaces on the punch and die. An adiustable hold-down M has its aperture surrounded by a circular brush supplied with lubricant from a receptacle h by a pipe t. More than two punches may be used and they may be of the same or of different diameters.
