Abstract

1475102 Braiding; braiding machines H MERKEL 27 July 1974 33270/74 Headings D1C and D1K [Also in Division F2] A braided stuffing-box packing has filaments of a different material secured to the basic material of the braid solely in the region of that surface which forms the friction surface of the packing in use. Suitably the different, additional material is a low friction, high wear- and heat-resistant material such as P.T.F.E. or graphite fibres and the basic material may be asbestos filaments. Preferably the additional filaments are braided with the strands of basic material by confining the additional filament carriers 5.1 to 5.4 to driving wheels A to D associated with the surface of the packing in question. The basic strand carriers 1.1 to 4.8 have conventional single driving pins while the carriers 5.1 to 5.4 have double pins engaging in concentric tracking. A tubular braiding method may also be used.
