Abstract
1474958 Removing sulphur oxides; alumina EXXON RESEARCH & ENG CO 26 July 1974 [23 Aug 1973] 33046/74 Heading C1A Sulphur oxides are removed from a gas mixture by contacting the gas with a solid comprising (a) a low surface area refractory substrate and (b) an outer layer deposited on the substrate comprising an adherent adsorptive refractory metal oxide film having a surface area greater than the surface area of the substrate and a transition metal or transition metal oxide. The substrate may be shaped, e.g. sphere, saddle, honeycomb, with a surface area of 1-3 m.<SP>2</SP>/g. (N 2 adsorption, BET). The film surface area is preferably at least 75 m.<SP>2</SP>/g. The substrate may be Al 2 O 3 , TiO 2 , porcelain, clays or a metal, e.g. Ti or steel wire. The adherent film may be a catalyst carrier, e.g. Al 2 O 3 , TiO 2 , ZrO 2 0À001- 0À01 inch thick, and formed by contacting the substrate with metal alkoxide or alkyl, and calcining. The film then be impregnated with a solution of a decomposable compound of the active material. Alternatively, oxide film and active material may be co-precipitated. CuO is a preferred sorbent, which may be regenerated with H 2 /steam at desulphurization temperatures.
