Abstract

1474716 Ion selective membrane MATSUSHITA ELECTRIC INDUSTRIAL CO Ltd 10 Dec 1974 [10 Dec 1973(4)] 53434/74 Heading G1N A ion selective membrane is made by coating particles of AgCl, AgBr, or AgI (selective for Cl, Br, and I respectively) with a layer of Ag 2 S by reaction with a solution of Na 2 S, and compressing the coated particles. The particles are prepared by precipitation, and are coated by adding a solution of Na 2 S to the agitated suspension of the particles. Preferably the coated particles are etched by a solution of HNO 3 , crushed to a finer particle size, and recoated with Ag 2 S. The surface of the membrane to be exposed to a sample solution is polished and ultrasonically cleared in an alcohol solution. The opposite surface is coated with a conductive film of gold, silver, copper, or nickel by vacuum deposition. Measurements may be made in conjunction with a saturated calomel reference electrode.
