Abstract
1474709 Stabilized optical apparatus RANK ORGANISATION Ltd 24 Nov 1975 [23 Oct 1974] 45837/74 Heading G2J A camera, e.g. a TV camera, comprises a lens 1 and a fibre optic bundle 2 having an input end at the image surface of the lens and an output end at an image-receiving portion 6 of the camera. Either the input end of the bundle 2 is fixed relative to the lens 1 or the output end is fixed relative to the image-receiving portion 6 and the unfixed end of the bundle is mounted for translational movement in two mutually perpendicular directions transverse to the axis of the bundle and for rotational movement about the axis of the bundle. Means are provided for controlling the movement of the unfixed end of the bundle in such a way as to tend to maintain the position of the image at the output end stationary relative to the portion 6. In Fig. 1, the movement of the end of the bundle is controlled by servo-drives 3, 4 and 5 or mechanical link-works coupled to high inertia masses. In a practical embodiment Figs. 3, 4 (not shown), the end of the fibre bundle is mounted on a plate which is movable on horizontal bearings by means of a servo-motor, a splined shaft, a gear-box and a lead screw nut. The horizontal bearings are mounted on a further plate which is movable on vertical bearings by means of a servo-motor, gearbox and lead screw. The servo-drive systems include tachogenerators and electro-mechanical pick-off devices. For rotational stabilization, the end of the fibre bundle is mounted in a rotary bearing and is coupled by a flexible coupling to a flywheel surrounded by damping fluid. The fibre bundle may have a spherical or aspherical input surface to accommodate the field curvature of the lens; the bundle may be moved by the servo-drives about the centre of curvature of the field surface. Cosmetic defects in the fibre bundle may be overcome by the synchronous nutation of the images at the input and output ends of the bundle by mechanical or optical means. In another embodiment, the input end of the bundle is fixed relative to the camera lens and the output end is controlled by servo-drives.
