Abstract

1474633 Distributing television programmes BRITISH RELAY Ltd 13 Aug 1975 [17 Sept 1974] 40457/74 Heading H4R A television programme is distributed as a suppressed carrier modulation together with a pilot carrier and a further signal having the same frequency as the suppressed carrier bit quadrature phase, and at a receiver the suppressed carrier is reconstituted 22 from the pilot and used in a synchronous detector 21 to demodulate the transmission, the D.C. output 23 of the detector 21 being used to control a phase shifter in the circuit 22 to lock the quadrature signal with the quadrature phase shifted and recovered pilot. The pilot may be the same frequency, a harmonic or a subharmonic of the suppressed carrier and may be transmitted over the same VHF coaxial cable as the programme as over a different cable pair 17 possibly carrying another TV programme. The pilot may be common to plural programme pairs or multiple pilots may be interchanged to effect scrambling according to a code transmitted with the programme. Separate synchronous detectors for the video signal and the D.C. control loop 23 may be provided.
