Abstract

1474308 Casting metals CENTRE DE RECHERCHES METALLURGIQUES-CENTRUM VOOR RESEARCH IN DE METALLURGIE 31 Oct 1975 [31 Oct 1974] 45561/75 Heading B3F [Also in Division G1] A device for use in determining the tendency of a metal to form cracks while passing from a liquid to a solid state, comprises a hollow body having an elongate portion 3, 7, 4 of substantially uniform cross-section and two enlarged portions 5, 6 spaced from one another by the elongate portion, at least one of the enlarged portions communicating with a duct 8 for conveying molten metal to fill up the hollow body thereby forming a specimen. The metal solidifying in the enlarged portions prevents shrinkage of the metal in the elongate portion to induce a stress which may cause cracking in the metal in the elongate portion. Fig. 1 shows one of two identical longitudinal halves of the hollow body and may consist of two metal sampling mounds 1, 2. Mould 1 has an enlarged portion 5 and elongate portion 3 joined by a portion 7 to the elongate portion 4 and enlarged portion 6 of mould 2. The enlarged portion 5 communicates with a duct 8 for conveying molten metal into the body. In use, the two halves of the body are held in position by a cardboard strip and the body immersed in the molten metal and, as soon as it is full, the body is withdrawn from the molten metal. When the metal has solidified it is shaken out of body and examined for cracks. In another embodiment, the body is of refractory material, such as quartz, and formed with a tubular portion 11 between two enlarged portions 12, 13, portions 13 having a duct 14 for conveying molten metal into the body, and portion 12 having a duct 15 connectible to a vacuum means for drawing molten metal into the body when the duct 14 is immersed in the molten metal.
