Abstract

1474232 Polymerization of water-soluble monomers into gels; recovering gels from reaction vessels NITTO KAGAKU KOGYO KK 2 May 1974 [2 May 1973 7 July 1973 2 Aug 1973 (2)] 19257/74 Heading C3P An aqueous solution of a water-soluble monomer is polymerized to form a gel by a process wherein: (i) the mass of gel is unagitated during polymerization, (ii) the temperature of the gel is permitted to rise due to the heat of polymerization, (iii) heat is supplied to the polymerization vessel to compensate for the heat sink properties of the vessel and auxiliaries and provide uniform temperature throughout, and (iv) the weight ratio of the monomer to the water is chosen so that the final gel will fall out of the polymerization vessel under its own weight. After polymerization the vessel is upended and the mass of gel is caused to collide with a rigid bar disposed between the vessel and a receptor for the gel so that the bar absorbs the energy of falling of the gel. The preferred monomer is acrylamide.
