Abstract

1474101 Embossing IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 11 April 1975 [26 April 1974 1 Nov 1974] 18326/74 and 47356/74 Heading B6J [Also in Division D1] A method of producing a spot bonded non- woven fabric by compressing a web between two members whose co-operating surfaces each have different surface land patterns heated sufficiently to activate thermally bondable (fibrous) material in the web is characterized in that the lands are isolated projections opposed pairs of which, one or each member, differ from at least some other such pairs in their degree of relative register in two directions at right angles. As exemplified each member is a patterned roll. The two rolls have different types of pattern, or the spacing of the pattern on one roll is different from that on the second roll and/or one pattern is skewed with respect to the other. Skew angles of 3 and 15 degrees are exemplified. Preferably the rolls are accurately parallel and one or both patterns are skewed with respect to the axis of their roll, but for larger rolls it is possible to skew one roll with respect to the other. With a rectangular pattern skewing the pattern ensures that there are always some lands at the nip. Specified land patterns are a square array of square lands, a square pattern of rectangular lands skewed at 3 degrees, a pattern of echeloned dashes and an engraved pattern of intersecting broken lines. The web to be embossed may be corded or airlaid and may be needle punched before hot embossing. In Example 1 the fibres are of crimp 1 cm. nylon 66 core/nylon 6 sheath fibres with a core/sheath volume ratio of 1. The rolls were heated to 217‹ C. In Example 2 the fibres were 6 crimp/cm. polyethylene terephthalate core (67%)/ethylene/isophthalate-ethylene terephthalate sheath (33%). Other fibres are (3) nylon 6 monocomponent, (4) nylon 6 mixed with nylon 66, (5) wool mixed with the sheath/ core fibres of Example 1 and (6) nylon 66 mixed with the fibres of Example 1. The fibres may have up to 15À4 crimps/cm. although non- crimped fibres give a stronger product. Dressing the fibres with 0À1% silica and a fatty alcohol/ ethylene oxide condensate before web formation also increases the fabric strength.
