Abstract

1474017 Coated products G D SEARLE & CO Ltd 16 May 1974 [22 March 1973] 14004/73 Heading B2E Aqueous material, e.g. solutions for biological testing, is carried on areas 40 of a support member, e.g. a tape 4. The upper support surface of tape 4 is hydrophobic and areas 40 are hydrophilic and such that aqueous material applied to cover areas 40 is inhibited from flowing over or retracting from the hydrophilic/hydrophobic boundary. In a further form of such a tape, the hydrophilic coating is confined to a central longitudinal portion of the tape. The coating may be a mixture of a water soluble hydrophilic substance with a substantially water insoluble substance. The water soluble substance may be polyvinyl pyrrolidone or polyethylene glycol and the water insoluble substance may be ethyl cellulose, methyl methacrylate, ethyl methacrylate or butyl methacrylate. Preferred coatings are 1 part polyvinyl pyrrolidone to two parts ethyl cellulose, three parts polyvinyl pyrrolidone to eight parts methyl, butyl or ethyl methacrylate and one part polyethylene glycol to nine parts of cellulose nitrate.
