Abstract

1473183 Pipe couplings SOC ANON AUTOMOBILES CITROEN 20 May 1974 [23 May 1973 9 July 1973] 22359/74 Heading F2G A pipe joint comprises two collars 3, 4, to be joined to the two pipes 1 and 2, having flanges 3a and 4a one or both of which having axially facing surfaces of dihedral shape such that, when joined by two axial bolts opposite one another along the major diameter of the oval flanges, one pipe may pivot about the apex of the dihedral, relative to the other pipe, in a single axial plane. In a preferred embodiment the pipe 2 extends beyond the collar 4, to which it is circumferentially welded, such that it extends into collar 3 when the joint is assembled and an elastic diaphragm is interposed between the flanges 3a and 4a, fitting over the portion of the pipe 2 extending beyond collar 4, this diaphragm comprising two annular members 6, sealingly connected at their periphery by a crimped ring 7, each having a cylindrical portion 6a, a flat zone 6b and a bead 6c which is convex at the exterior over the major part of its periphery but progressively flattens out to either side of an axial plane perpendicular to the apex lines 8 becoming flat in the axial plane containing these apex lines. The two collars 3 and 4 are attached to one another by bolts 10 passing through washers 11, holes 12 provided in lips 3a, 4a, of collars 3, 4, holes 13 in the disc and holes 16 in wedges 14, secured by dihedrally shaped nuts. In a second embodiment (see Fig. 5) collars 3 and 4 are assembled inside the respective pipes 1 and 2 which are provided with slots and are attached to the collars by clamps secured by bolts and a separate tubular spigot is provided to enter collar 3 which is attached to the inner surface of collar 4. In addition the rounded portions 3c and 4c of the collars are arranged inside the diaphragm formed by ring 6. A third embodiment has wedges 14 omitted and the shaped nuts are replaced by conventional nuts with spring washers interposed to allow the desired pivoting motion. In a fourth embodiment collars 3 and 4 are replaced by cast metal or sintered collars. A fifth embodiment has the elastic diaphragm omitted and the end faces 3a, 4b of the collars are in direct contact with each other, a flexible tube being arranged inside collars 3 and 4 having a tapered portion at each end sprung against the tapered inner surface of the corresponding collar, the joint being secured by bolts as in the aforementioned preferred embodiment but using conventional bolts.
