Abstract

1473055 Coating with polyamides BAYER AG 9 Sept 1975 [12 Sept 1974 (2)] 37041/75 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions B5 and C3] A process for preparing polycondensates with cyclic imide linkages, comprises polycondensing a polyiso-cyanate or thiocyanate, which may be masked, with a carboxy reactant having a cyclic diCOOH anhydride group and at least one further anhydride, carboxyl, carboxylic alkyl or aryl ester, or SO 3 H group at from 0 to 450‹C in its presence of formic acid. The formic acid may be in an amount of 0.1 to 40 mol % related to the isocyanate. Reaction may be effected in a solvent. Numerous reactants, catalysts and solvents are specified. The products may be modified by incorporating polyols, polycarboxylic acids, polycarbamic acid esters, polyesters or polyethers. The products are useful as lacquers for coating metals, e.g. aluminium or steel plates, or wires, and for forming films and laminates. The solution obtained in the reaction may be diluted eg. with xylene to form lacquers. In specific Examples the reactants used are 4, 4'- diisocyanato-diphenyl-methane, -propene or -ether, phenylene-1, 3-diisocyanate, tolylene-2, 4-diisocyanate and trimellitic anhydride. Coatings. Most Examples describe lacquering wires. In Ex. 3, 2 coats of the lacquer is applied to a wire already lacquered with polyurethane and in Ex. 4 a 0.7 mm wire is lacquered with 4 coats of a lacquer containing 100 p.b.w. polyvinyl formal, 60 p.b.w. mashed polyisocyanate, 5 p.b.w. melamine formaldehyde resin and 5 p.b.w. phenol formaldehyde resin in cresol/xylene, and then with 2 coats of the lacquer of the invention. Laminates. In Ex. 5 a woven glass fibre fabric is impregnated with a solution of the polycondensate and air dried and several layers of the impregnated fabric are laminated to a thickness of 3 mm.
