Abstract

1472224 Polymerization of norbornene esters BAYER AG 5 July 1974 [7 July 1973] 29884/74 Heading C3P A norbornene of the formula in which X and Y are -CO.OR 3 or O.CO.R 4 and one of X and Y may be hydrogen, R 1 and R 2 are hydrogen or alkyl and R 3 and R 4 are alkyl, is polymerized by ring-opening in the presence of, as catalyst, a mixture or reaction product of (A) a tungsten halide or oxyhalide and (B) an alcohol (including haloalcohols), together with (C) an organoaluminium compound and (D) boron trifluoride or an etherate thereof. Examples refer to the polymerization of 5- norbornene - 2 - carboxylic acid butyl ester, alone or together with cyclopentene, 5-norbornenyl - 2 - acetate, or 5 - methyl - 5 - norbornene - 2 - carboxylic acid methyl ester in the presence of (A) WCl 6 and (B) 2-chloroethanol as a reaction product of formula WCl 4 (OC 2 H 4 Cl) 2 , together with (C) AlEt 3 and (D) BF 3 .Et 2 O.
