1472174 Dihydroxyphenyl amino cephalo- Sporins BEECHAM GROUP Ltd 4 Sept 1974 [22 Sept 1973 20 March 1974] 44527/73 and 12241/74 Heading C2C The invention comprises compounds of the formula and salts thereof, wherein R is H, acetoxy, carbamoyloxy or -SR<SP>1</SP> where R<SP>1</SP> is a 5- membered heterocyclic ring containing 3 or 4 N, O and/or S atoms which may be substituted with one or two C 1 -C 4 alkyl or alkoxy, CF 3 , CH 3 S, CO 2 R<SP>2</SP> or CH 2 CO 2 R<SP>2</SP> groups where R<SP>2</SP> is H or C 1 -C 4 alkyl. They may be obtained by N-acylation of a compound of the formula or a salt, ester or silyl derivative thereof, with a N-protected acylating agent derived from 3,4- dehydroxyphenylglycine and thereafter removing the protecting group. Pharmaceutical compositions having antibacterial activity comprise compounds of Formula I above in association with a carrier and are particularly suitable for oral administration.
