Abstract

Liquid containing organic matter is subjected to the action of gas bubbles and the matter to which the gas adheres is separated by flotation; other matters are then removed by successive treatment with flotation agents and gas. Insoluble soap and oil are mentioned as suitable flotation agents and air and carbon dioxide as suitable gases. The method is applicable to liquors containing fat, butter, soap, waxes, vegetable or minerals oils, to waste liquors from the treatment of hides, from textile and woolwashing plants and laundries, to silk gum liquors and fullers' liquors. The liquor may be treated, either before or simultaneously, with the gas treatment, with a precipitating, coagulating or flocculating agent. The liquor may be agitated during the gas treatment. The separated organic matter may be dehydrated, for example by filtration under suction, and further treated for the recovery of valuable products. In the case of waste liquor from tanneries, hair is first separated by gas treatment, then insoluble soap is added to mix with the fleshings and hide particles, the mixture being separated from the liquor by further treatment with gas.
