Abstract

1471950 Poly(naphthalene ester) fibres TEIJIN Ltd 19 June 1974 [19 June 1973 27 June 1973] 27206/74 Heading B5B [Also in Divisions D1 and E2] Filaments, fibres and yarns have at least one X-ray diffraction peak at a Bragg scattering angle 2#=16À3 degrees to 16À7 degrees and/or 2#=25À3 degrees to 25À8 degrees. They comprise a polyester having units derived from naphthalene-2,6-dicarboxylic acid and a glycol of formula HO-(CA 2 ) n -OH where n is 4 or 6. Optionally, ester units derived from other dicarboxylic acids and/or other dihydric alcohols may be included, but at least 85% of the ester units must be derived from the specified acid and glycols. The polyester must have an intrinsic viscosity (as defied) of 0À3 to 3À5 and a softening point (as defined) of at least 200‹ C. They may be produced by melt spinning the polyester to form undrawn filaments having a birefringence of at least 0À01 and a density of no more than 1À300 and then drawing these in at least one step at a temperature of at least 60‹ C. to a total draw ratio of at least 1À8. A heattreatment step under restricted stretch or shrinkage is optional. In examples the just-extruded filaments may be passed through a zone heated at 200- 600‹C. The filaments may be air-cooled or quenched in liquid. The drawing may be performed in two stages and, in some Examples, is performed in a heated liquid (e.g. ethylene glycol).
