Abstract

1471854 Hydrogenation catalyst INVENTA AG 22 Jan 1976 [20 Feb 1975] 2417/76 Heading B1E [Also in Division C2] A palladium metal catalyst having a support comprising calcium carbonate and calcium hydrogen phosphate is prepared in Example I by the following process:- (a) 3600 parts by vol. of 20 % by wt CaCl 2 solution were added at 90‹C with stirring to 6890 parts by volume of a 10% by weight sodium carbonate solution. After cooling, the calcium carbonate formed was filtered off and washed with water until no more chloride ions could be detected. Finally the calcium carbonate was dried at 130‹C in a vacuum drying chamber. (b) 400 parts by weight of the calcium carbonate obtained were mixed with 100g of calcium hydrogen phosphate and stirred at 40‹C together with 2250 parts by volume of a solution containing 2% by weight of palladium in the form of palladium chloride to form a suspension. After a short time, practically all the palladium chloride had been absorbed on the support. A mixture of 370 parts by volume of 4% by weight sodium hydroxide solution and 180 parts by volume of 40% by weight formaldehyde solution was then added slowly with continuous stirring. The reduced catalyst was filtered off, washed with water until no more chloride ions could be detected and then dried at 130‹C in vacuo. The catalyst contained 5% by weight of palladium. After mixing 2% by weight of graphite and 0.5% by weight of polyvinyl alcohol with the powder, it was pressed into tablets with a diameter of 5 mm and a thickness of 3-5 mm. The catalyst was treated with H 2 at 120‹C before use.
