1471667 Rotary drier W H DICKINSON ENG Ltd 25 July 1974 [26 July 1973 (2)] 35582/73 and 35583/73 Heading F4G A rotary drier, e.g. for tobacco, comprises a cylinder with its axis arranged horizontally, means to rotate the cylinder about its axis, and a plurality of heating elements arranged round the interior of the periphery of the cylinder and so arranged that the said elements may be selectively operated by a control means 84. In a modification a pipe 226 extends axially into the cylinder 201, the pipe having one or more openings for the delivery of conditioning fluid into the cylinder and a number of outlets for discharging conditioning fluid from the cylinder at various points along the cylinder. At least some of the heating elements also extend inwardly and act as paddles to tumble the tobacco. Inlet and outlet headers 82, 83, 244, 245 comprise pipes extending circumferentially around a major part of the periphery of the cylinder 20 or 201 and all the heating elements are connected in parallel between the headers, the heating elements being axially extending pipes joined connected by short connecting pipes to form a sinuous path, the pipes transmitting the heating medium. Stop valves 84 are located between at least one of the headers 82, 83, 244 or 245 and some of the heating elements control the flow of heating medium through those elements.
