Abstract

1471383 A facsimile system EXXON RESEARCH & ENG CO 13 Sept 1974 40016/74 Heading H4F A facsimile system comprises a rotatable document carrying drum 12, Fig. 1, and a read/ write head 16 incorporating a fibre optic system, the head being biased towards the drum by means of a spring-loaded roller 206 which bears on the casing of the apparatus so as to cause the head to ride on a document on the drum and maintain a fixed distance between the document and the end of the fibre optic system. The head 16 carries a fibre optic bundle 36 in a recess 254, Fig. 11, of an arcuate document contacting surface 202 of the head which maintains the exposed fibre optic ends 250 at the predetermined distance from the document mounted on the drum. The bundle comprises at least one light receiving fibre and at least one light emitting fibre so that it may simultaneously illuminate and read the original document carried by the drum. The head 16, Fig. 1, is mounted on a drive shaft 20 disposed parallel to the axis of rotation of drum 12 and moved therealong by the interaction of skewed rollers 215, Fig. 9, mounted on the head, and carries a control shaft 212. A cam 210 is mounted on the control shaft 212 so that when turning the latter about its axis the cam 210 disengages the head biasing spring 208 from the underside of a housing cover part 214 and releases the rollers 215 from engagement with shaft 20 by overcoming resilience of roller retaining spring washers 222, enabling the head to be moved freely and axially along shaft 20. The control shaft 212 has an actuating knob 118 at its forward end and this knob has integrally mounted theron a cutting wheel 64, Fig. 11, and a soft roller 116 so that by turning the knob 118 in one direction the document may be cut and by turning the knob in the opposite direction the head position may be freely adjusted along the drum. To facilitate cutting, axial grooves (120), Fig. 4 (not shown), may be provided on the curved surface of the drum. A second cam 236, Fig. 9, is provided on the rear end of the control shaft 212 which, when knob 118 is turned, actuates a micro switch 230 which interrupts the power supply to a stylus 38 mounted on the head adjacent the fibre optic end. The stylus 38 extends into contact with an electronsensitive record medium carried by the drum when the device is used in the receiving mode. The head 16 further comprises a lamp 258, Fig. 8, for supplying light to the illuminating fibres (302, Fig. 14, not shown). An infra-red filter may also be used to facilitate the detection of blue ball-point pen ink.
