Abstract

1471373 Rumen micro-organisms W R GRACE & CO 11 April 1974 [25 June 1973] 16323/74 Heading C6F The milk production of cows is improved by administering, as a liquid broth, rumen microorganisms cultured on, and adapted to, a high concentrate nutrient medium which is an aqueous broth containing essentially 45-95 parts by weight starchy concentrate, 1-55 parts forage or roughage 0-10 parts molasses 0-10 parts minerals, and 0-40 parts artificial saliva mix. The broth may be administered as a drench of 350 ml, preferably containing 10<SP>6</SP>-10<SP>12</SP> micro-organisms, and during a period when the cows milk begins to decline, e.g. 80-140 days after calving, or may be administered at calving. The cow is preferably on a 45-50% starch basal ration. The broth may be prepared by introducing viable micro-organisms isolated or cultured from the rumen fluid of a bovine ruminant animal, into the high concentrate nutrient medium, culturing under carbon dioxide, through stages sufficient to ensure complete in vitro adaptation and collecting the adapted rumen micro-organisms for administration.
