Abstract
1471217 Milling cutters GENERAL REFRACTORIES CO 1 May 1974 [2 May 1973] 19136/74 Heading B3K [Also in Divisions B1 B5 and C1] A ceramic catalyst support for an automotive pollution control device, or a heat exchanger, (see Divisions B1, C1 and F4), comprises an extruded dried and fired extrusion of circular periphery, having a plurality of parallel circular bars i.e. at least 100, or 195 or more bores per square inch, repeating in a pattern of bores hexagonally disposed and equally spaced axially around a central bore. The extrusion (see Divisions B4-B5) is effected from the Figs. 2 and 4 die, comprising a metal or plastics die plate 10, having a plurality of passages 18 for the ceramic and which, at its downstream end, is integrally formed with a plurality of spaced apart pins 20 defining the bores, and which are surrounded by a collar 12 defining the periphery of the extrusion. The pins 20 each overlap a portion of adjacent pairs of passages 18, and the ratio of the area 22 between the pins 20, to that of the passages 18, is between 0À65 to 1À0. The die plate 10 is preferably of cold rolled low carbon steel coated with electroless nickel to reduce corrosion and friction and the pins 20 are integrally formed in the plate 10 by milling the plate by the milling cutter 50, Figs. 8A and 8B, comprising an annular cutting head 52 having a pair of diametrically spaced radially extended cutting edges 56, each defined between an axially extending surface 60 and a helically extending surface having different inclinations 54, 58. The leading surface 54 makes an angle α, to the plane at right angles to the cutter axis, of 9 to 11 degrees and preferably 10 degrees. The surface 58 makes an angle B, to a plane parallel to the axis of the cutter of at least 55 degrees. As shown in Fig. 8B, the cutter comprises a radially thickened portion 62, of a length less than that of the pins being machined. The cutting portion of the cutter comprises steel hardened to a Rockwell hardness of 60 to 62.
