Abstract

1470412 Stabilizing polyurethanes AMERICAN CYANAMID CO 21 March 1974 [9 April 1973] 19627/76 Divided out of 1470411 Heading C3R Polyurethanes are stabilized against the deteriorative effects of u.v. light and nitrogen oxides by having intimately admixed therewith an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic mono- or diisocyanate, the polyurethane being the product of the chain extension with water of a prepolymer prepared by reacting a polyether or polyester polyol with an aromatic diisocyanate. The stabilizing isocyanate may be incorporated by adding it to the prepolymer prior to emulsification in water or to the emulsion itself. Preferred amounts of stabilizing isocyanate are 0À1 to 5% based on the weight of the prepolymer. Suitable stabilizers are methylene bis-(4-oyclohexyl isocyanate), cyclohexyl isocyanate and butyl isocyanate. The polyurethane may also contain a u.v. light absorber and an antioxidant.
