Abstract

1470109 Rendering flock electrically conductive BAYER AG 29 Nov 1974 [25 Jan 1974] 51791/74 Headings DIP and D1R A flock of synthetic fibres is treated to render the fibres electrically conductive without losing their "springiness" in an electric field or causing them to "stick" to each other or to the flocking apparatus, by applying a polymeric aromatic or araliphatic compound containing SO 3 X groups, where X is hydrogen and/or NH 4 and/or an alkali metal. Preferably the polymer is applied from an acidic aqueous solution at 50 to 100‹C and the flock is subsequently treated with a 0.05 to 10% by weight of the flock of a finishing agent, optionally in the presence of from 1 to 30% by wt., based on the flock, of a water soluble alkali metal salt, with a finishing preparation used in such a quantity that the solution contains 0.65 to 10% by weight of the finishing preparation, based on the flock. The flock is of nylon 6, nylon 6.6 or polyethylene terephthalate. The SO,X containing polymers are the (-CH 2 SO 3 X) sulphonation and/or sulphomethylation products of naphthalene, diphenyl, terphenylene (o, m, p), hydroxy naphthalene, dihydroxydiphenylpropane, diphenyl sulphone, phenol, cresols (o, m, p) and mixtures thereof. Specified finishing agents are C 12 H 25 OSO 3 Na, C 18 H 37 OSO 3 Na, C 12 H 25 O (CH 2 CH 2 O) 4 SO 3 Na, [C 18 H 35 O (CH 2 CH 2 O) 5 ] 2 PO 2 Na, sulphonated olive oil, castor oil, sperm oil or beef tallow, stearoyl-N-dimethylaminopropyl amide acetate, C 18 H 37 CONHCH 2 CH 3 NHCH 2 CH 2 NH 2 Cl, (C 18 H 37 ) 2 N Me 2 Cl, C 18 H 37 CON(CH 2 CH 2 OH) 2 , C 18 H 37 COO (CH 2 CH 2 O) 6 H, C 18 H 35 O (CH 2 CH 2 O) 26 H and In Examples 1, 2 and 5 the flock is stirred for 20 minutes in an aqueous formic acid solution of the sodium salt of an aromatic polysulphonic acid then a solution of sodium chloride plus finishing agent is added to the suspension which is stirred for a further 20 minutes and the treated flock filtered, centrifuged and dried. In examples 3, 4 and 6 the flock is filtered from the solution of aromatic polysulphonic acid, rinsed then stirred into an aqueous solution of sodium chloride plus finishing agent.
