Abstract

1470034 Amorphous Pt particles BRITISH PETROLEUM Co Ltd 12 Dec 1975 [13 Jan 1975] 1276/75 Heading C7D Amorphous platinum metal particles are characterized in that they do not produce the x-ray diffraction pattern characteristic of crystalline platinum. The amorphous Pt particles may be produced by bringing a material containing finely divided Pt in a highly oxidized state on a refractory support, e.g. alumina, silica, magnesia or a zeolite, to a temperature of at least 300‹C in a non-reducing atmosphere, reducing with hydrogen at a temperature of at least 300‹C under super-atmospheric pressure and contacting the reduced material with a solvent, e.g. caustic soda, HF, HNO 3 , HCl, H 2 SO 4 , so that the support is dissolved and separating the suspended amorphous Pt metal particles from the solution, e.g. by centrifuging, filtration, flocculation or the use of membranes. The finely divided Pt starting material may be prepared from commercial reforming catalysts by regeneration, burning in oxidizing gas, or rejuvenation, treating with O 2 and Cl 2 , or may be prepared by treating the refractory support with a solution of a Pt compound, e.g. by impregnation or ion-exchange, and reducing the metal compound to produce finely divided Pt on the refractory support. The amorphous Pt product may be used in electrodes for fuel cells and batteries.
