Abstract

1469845 Anionic acrylate polymerization; polyacrylic acids HOECHST AG 28 Nov 1974 [30 Nov 1973] 51646/74 Heading C3P [Also in Division A5] An isotactic polyacrylic acid is obtained by (a) polymerizing an ester of acrylic acid with an alcohol branched in the alpha position from a solution thereof in an inert solvent using an anionic catalyst at 0‹ to - 80‹ C. (b) if necessary removing any atactic polymer present in excess of 25% and (c) subjecting the polyacrylate to acid hydrolysis. The polymerization is controlled to produce the desired stereoregular product having a molecular weight of 5,000 to 40,000 and a polydispersity of 1À1 to 2. The polymer may be converted into a conventional salt form or ester. Examples refer to the polymerization of isopropyl acrylate in toluene at - 78‹ C. using phenyl magnesium bromide, followed by hydrolysis by refluxing in a water/ trifluoroacetic acid mixture. The polyacrylic acid is then tested in salt form for its antiviral activity in conventional aqueous pharmaceutical preparations.
