1469707 Anti-skid tyre attachments DETWILER CORP 23 April 1974 17729/74 Heading B7C [Also in Division F2] An anti-skid tyre attachment comprises spaced, parallel, flexible straps 26 or 26c connected at their ends by members 24, or 42. The straps each have a greater width than thickness, and the attachment is such that when in use and the tyre begins to skid the friction between a road or runway surface and an adjacent strap causes the central portion of that strap to twist (Fig. 8) to increase the frictional engagement between the surface and the tyre to assist in halting the skid. In the embodiment of Figs. 1 and 6, the straps, which are made of polyurethane or high molecular weight polyethylene, each have at least one reinforcing member 32, e.g. of nylon, fibreglass, polyester, polypropylene or cotton, and a plurality of teeth 31 embedded therein. The members 24 which may be steel cables or metal chains, and at least one of which includes a releasable fastening 25 are accommodated in bores 30 in the straps. Alternative straps (26a) (Figs. 9-11, not shown) are provided with grit or pulverized material (36), e.g. tungsten carbide, silicon carbide, aluminium oxide, aluminium silicate, boron carbide, or diamond dust, on their road contacting surfaces (33a); the teeth 31 being omitted. A further alternative strap (26b) (Figs. 12-14, not shown) has grit or pulverized material (37) over its whole length, and is provided with a reinforcing strip (32b) (Fig. 13, not shown) not extending as far as the bores. In the embodiment of Fig. 15, straps 26c which are made of polyurethane or rubber are attached to members 42, which are straps of cloth, metal or rubber, by clamps 45 which include two spaced plates connected by two screws 44 (Fig. 17) or rivets. Two pairs of holes 43 for receiving screws 44 are provided at the ends of each strap 26c to permit adjustment of the spacing between the members 42. Both members 42 have a releasably connected end. The surface of each strap 26c which in use engages the tyre tread is provided with grit, e.g. steel carbide particles.
