Abstract

1469109 Collapsible steering columns ARMSTRONG PATENTS CO Ltd 31 July 1974 [1 Aug 1973 11 April 1974] 36587/73 and 16105/74 Heading B7H [Also in Division F2] A mounting assembly for a collapsible steering column comprises a bracket 10 formed with slots 12, Fig. 1, extending from one edge thereof, the slots having a mounting block 14 for sliding along the slot with a retainer 22 which retains the block against sliding out of the slot and which is designed to fracture on being subjected to a predetermined load. In one embodiment the bracket 10 has a central curved portion welded to the outer tube 16 of a collapsible steering column. A washer 18, Fig. 2, abuts against the central portion of the block 14 to provide a space which allows the block 14 to slide along slot 12. Each block 14 has a central opening 24 for receiving a bolt 26 which cooperates with a nut 28 to secure the bracket 10 to part of the vehicle body 30. The retainer 22 is located across each slot 12 between notches 22 and is preferably moulded in situ and made of a plastics material or a zinc alloy. It is also possible to mount the bracket on the torquetransmitting shaft of the steering column in which case the shaft will be journalled in a bearing provided by the bracket so as to be rotatable but not axially displaceable. In another embodiment, Figs. 3, 4, the mounting block 40 has a cylindrical portion 48 which is received in aperture 54 of retainer 42 as an interference fit. Stepped ribs 56 on the retainer 42 slidably engage the walls of the slot 44. To retain the block against sliding out of slot 44 the retainer has a pair of frangible projections 58 which extend into recesses 60 formed in opposite sides of the slot.
