1469098 Laminating apparatus; roller and belt machine D WEISFELD 19 March 1974 [22 March 1973 22 Aug 1973] 13962/73 and 39878/73 Headings B5N and B5A [Also in Division B6] A machine for bonding or fusing materials: includes material input and output means, e.g. preparation: table 14 and off feed tray 16 respectively; a drum 40 mounted for rotation about a horizontal axis; an endless belt 42 that contacts the surface of the drum and extends at least part way around the surface thereof to form a treatment zone; a pressure roller 44 at one end of said zone; an idler roller 46f near the other end of the said zone; heating means, e.g. electric heater elements 48a to 48y exterior to the drum surface and extending over a substantial part of the zone; means for applying pressure to the pressure roller to squeeze the belt into frictional contact with the drum; means for rotating the pressure roller to drive the endless belt and the drum into rotation through frictional contact maintained by the pressure applied to the pressure roller, the direction of rotation being such that the idler roller is at the upstream end of the zone with respect to material fed into the machine by the material input means and the pressure roller is at the downstream end of the zone; and means for guiding the endless belt on a closed loop outside the zone, e.g. rollers 46a to 46e. In the embodiment shown, the belt is formed of polytetrafluoroethylene or canvas, the pressure roller 44 is mounted on a shaft 58 supported in bearings 60, each bearing being bolted by bolts 62 to plate 64 which is pivotably mounted to the machine by bolt assembly 66. The shaft 58 of the roller 44 carries a toothed wheel 68 engaging with endless driving chain 70 which is driven from electric motor 72 through worm gear-box 74. A pneumatic cylinder 76 has one end of its casing pivotably fixed to a flange of the machine casing by pivot 78, the piston of the cylinder being connected to one end of a rod 80, the other end of which is pivotably secured to the plate 64 at pivot 82, the rod consisting of a number of sections, the overall length of which is variable by adjustment of lock screws 84. A flexible pipe 86 connected to a pneumatic pump allows air pressure to act on the piston of the cylinder to move the rod 80 and pivot the plate 64 about the pivot 66 in a clockwise direction, an identical plate and cylinder arrangement being provided at the other side of the machine, pneumatic operation of the two cylinders pullthe pressure 44 into contact with the drum 40 to apply pressure to the drum through the belt 42 and hence driving the drum in a clockwise direction (as seen in Fig. 3). In an alternative form, the pneumatic cylinders are replaced by screw tensionable springs. The electric heater elements 48a to 48g are tubular in form and are backed by an aluminium heat reflector 94, a pair 48y, 48z of additional heater elements also backed by an aluminium reflector 95 being provided to boost the surface temperature of the drum in a zone where the belt does not contact the drum. A scraper 96 is provided to clean the drum afterthe heat and pressure treatment. The endless belt 42 is tensioned by a screw adjustment 22 in association with the tensioning roller 46b to move the roller horizontally towards or away from the drum 40. The apparatus may be used for bonding a material to a fusible interlining.
