Abstract
1468802 Repairing glass MINNESOTA MINING & MFG CO 18 March 1974 13958/73 Heading C1M [Also in Division C3] Cracked glass is repaired whilst restrained in its original position to obtain a product in which the crack is not visibly obvious by means of a liquid, volatile, solvent-free polymerizable composition which polymerizes without substantial expansion or contraction, without evolution of gaseous products and without heating at the ambient temperature of the glass, to yield a transparent film which will bond the opposed surfaces of a crack in glass, with sufficient strength to prevent further propagation of a standard crack in a glass pane (as defined) when the pane is subjected to a standard cleaning force (as defined) and which makes the crack less visibly obvious. The composition has a low degree of swelling in contact with water and is substantially stable to atmospheric ultraviolet radiation. The composition is capable of melting glass, penetrating into and filling a crack in an upright glass pane more quickly than it will run off the surface of the pane and has a viscosity not more than 1000 cP before appreciable polymerization. The composition comprises either (a) polyepoxides and at least one curing agent therefor or (b) an unsaturated polyester resin, a diluent, at least one polymerization catalyst and at least one polymerization accelerator. The composition may contain a silane, e.g. an aminosilane, an epoxysilane or a silane containing ethylenic unsaturation, which will react with one or more components of the composition. A typical example of (a) is a mixture of diglycidyl phthalate and diglycidyl adipate having a refractive index 1À517 and (CH 3 O) 3 Si(CH 2 ) 3 NH(CH 2 ) 3 NH 2 . (b) may comprise (by wt.) light stabilized, styrene-modified unsaturated polyester ("Crystic 191E", registered Trade Mark) 34 parts, methyl methacrylate 4 parts, catalyst and accelerator and 4 parts of (CH 3 O) 3 Si(CH 2 ) 3 OC(O)C(CH 3 ) = CH 2 . The composition preferably has a refractive index 1À513-1À527 so that mended cracks are not visibly obvious.
