Abstract

1468768 Coated products N C R CORP 15 May 1975 [10 June 1974] 20639/75 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions G2 and G5] A magneto-optical display device whereby different colours are selectively shown, or lettering is obscured or revealed by a magnetic-shutter effect, consists of a substrate of a certain colour and an overlying film including multiple micro-capsules each containing a liquid dispersion of magnetic flakes, the film having a colour in contrast to that of the substrate, there being sufficient microcapsules to ensure that the sum of the flatside areas of the flakes is 1.5 to 4.75 times the area of the capsular film. Magnetic alignment of the flakes parallel to the film surface results in display of the film colour, whereas alignment of the flakes perpendicular to the film surface reveals the substrate colour. The microcapsules are enclosed in, and adhered to the substrate by, a transparent polymeric binder, which may be coloured. Alternatively, the capsule walls or the liquid therein may be coloured, or again a further coating overlying the capsular film may be coloured. The microcapsules range in size from 5 to 1000 microns in diameter.
