Abstract
1468640 Reflective coated products TOYO SEIKAN KAISHA Ltd 8 April 1975 [8 April 1974] 14419/75 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions E1 G2 and G5] A reflective plate for use as a number plate on a vehicle, or as a road sign, consists of a mirror-finish metal substrate 1 coated with a prime layer 2 of a transparent thermosetting resin which is dried and coated with a further layer 3 of a transparent thermo-setting resin into which are dropped glass balls 4 of an average radius greater than the thickness of layer 3. Excess balls 4 are removed by suction, the remainder being uniformly disposed in mutual contact with each other, and layer 3 is then dried and coated with a transparent layer of a fusible polymer 5, such as an acrylic polymer, which is heated, melted. and dried. Finally, a transparent coating of a polyvinyl plastisol is applied and heat dried. Layer 2 is preferably equal in thickness to the focal length of each ball 4, and control of the thickness of layer 3, as above, ensures that only those balls resting on layer 2 remain after suction is applied. This gives maximum reflectivity for the plate, and gives sufficient strength to permit stamping out raised letters and numbers 7 on the finished plate without damaging the coatings. A coloured thermosetting resin 8 may be applied to the raised portions 7.
