Abstract
1467614 Surfactant-iodine complexes GAF CORP 14 May 1975 [14 June 1974] 20444/75 Heading C2C [Also in Divisions C3 and A5] Compositions useful in germicides and saniticizers comprise iodine complexes, in the presence of inorganic iodide, with a non-ionic or cationic surfactant or mixtures thereof, having a weight ratio of iodide to iodine of 0À05-0À25. The iodide may be HI, NH 4 I, alkaline or alkaline earth metal iodides. The surfactant may be non-ionic having the general formula where R is a residue or a water-insoluble organic compound having at least 6 carbon atoms and n = 6-50. In an example R is a nonyl-phenol residue and n is about 12. The complexes may be prepared by dissolving the iodide in a surfactant solution at 50-80‹ C. followed by dissolution of iodine at 20-50‹ C. without further heat. The products of the invention may have an available iodine content of 1-50% by wt. which remains stable on storage.
