Abstract
1467151 Compositions for coating metals AMCHEM PRODUCTS Inc 28 Feb 1974 [2 March 1973] 9125/74 Addition to 1356215 Heading C3P An aqueous composition for coating a metal surface comprises an anionic dispersion of a water-dispersible resin in an acidic aqueous phase having a pH of 1À6 to 5À0 and containing at least 0À025 gm./litre of dissolved ions of a metal other than iron in its trivalent state of Groups IVa to IVb of the Mendeleef Periodic Table being other than iron in the trivalent state and when used in coating metal surfaces being derived from a source other than the metal surface, the composition when contacted with the metal surface to be coated being capable of dissolving metal therefrom in an amount sufficient to cause the dispersed resin to deposit on the surface in the form of a resinous coating which increases in weight while the metal surface is in contact with the composition. The resin may be a styrene-butadiene copolymer, polyethylene, an ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer, an acrylonitrile-butadiene copolymer or other acrylic copolymer and may be used in the form of a latex. The composition may contain a coalescing agent, e.g. ethylene glycol mono-butyl ether and/or one or more pigments and/or a non-ionic or anionic surfactant. In the examples aqueous compositions containing a styrene-butadiene resin, hydrofluoric acid, and one of ferrous oxide or phosphate, chromium trifluoride trihydrate, silver acetate, fluoride or nitrate, cupric sulphate, lead dioxide, stannous fluoride, cobalt nitrate and cadmium tetrafluoride and in some cases cyanine blue and/or a surfactant are used in coating one or more of steel, aluminium, zinc, tin, nickel plated steel, lead, copper, brass, bronze or an aluminium/zinc alloy.
