Abstract

1466647 Flywheels; energy storage devices JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY 13 March 1975 [18 March 1974] 10579/75 Headings F2T and F2X In a flywheel, in which the rim has concentric layers or turns of rods, tapes or filaments of an elastically anisotropic material with its greater tensile strength in the circumferential direction of the turns, the turns are bound together at widely spaced intervals by ties or adhesive bonding. The turns may be annular or spiral. The ties and rims may be made from filaments. The filaments may be of epoxy, nylon, glass or carbon. The rim may be connected to a hub (28) by spokes (18, Fig. 3, not shown) of fibres having a smaller tensile strength than those of the rim so that, on rotation, the spokes stretch to accommodate the centrifugal expansion of the rim. Alternatively, in a form in which ballast (140, Fig. 21, not shown) is used the rim, when stationary, is non-circular and becomes circular under centrifugal force. Spokes 90, 92 are formed as flexible hoops. Each section of an axially divided rim (Figs. 23 and 24, not shown) has a single tie band.
