Abstract
1465736 Foam-filled mouldings HOECHST AG 31 Jan 1974 [31 Jan 1973] 04571/74 Heading B5A In a single-piece hollow moulding having a cavity, the cavity contains an open cell material, the moulding also having an orifice too small for insertion of the open cell material. The moulding is preferably made by blow-moulding, e.g. a polyolefin such as low pressure polyethylene, the open cell material being a foamed polyether or polyurethane, a foamed rubber or natural sponge. As shown in Fig. 1, resilient open cell material 3 is held in a compressed state on an auxiliary mandrel 4 on top of a blowing and calibrating mandrel 5, a tubular parison 2 is extruded thereover from extrusion nozzle 1, blow-mould 6 closed therearound and the parison blow-moulded. The material 3 is then allowed to expand. The open cell material is held in the compressed state by a strip or tube of flexible sheeting, tubing or fabric wound or closed thereon and the material may then be frozen to maintain compression after the sheeting, tubing, or fabric is removed, either before or after moulding, e.g. by solvent. Expansion is then effected by warming, e.g. with hot air. The article may be a fuel tank.
