Abstract

1465653 Coating wire by a radiation polymerization process W R GRACE & CO 3 May 1974 [4 May 1973 20 March 1974] 19619/74 Headings C3R R7N7 R7N5A R7N5B and R7PX A process for forming a solid plastics coating on a wire comprises coating the wire with a liquid composition at a temperature of up to 100 C, or at a temperature at which the composition is a liquid, said composition comprising (1) a polyene containing per molecule at least two unsaturated carbon to carbon bonds reactive under the action of ultraviolet or high energy radiation with a polythiol and (2) a polythiol containing at least two thiol groups per molecule, the total number of the said unsaturated bonds per molecule of polyene and thiol groups per molecule of polythiol being greater than four; and exposing the coated wire to ultraviolet or high energy radiation to cure the liquid composition. The liquid composition may also include a photocuring accelerator (e.g. benzophenone) as well as a polymerization inhibitor and other conventional coating additives which are inert with respect to the radiation curing. Useful polyenes include triallyl isocyanurate; poly(diallyl orthophthalate); dially chlorendate; the product obtained by reacting trimethylolpropane diallyl ether with toluene diisocyanate to form an allylterminated monoisocyanate, and reacting the latter with 1,5-di(2-hydroxyethyl)-3,3-di-methylhydantoin in a molar ratio of 2:1; and the product obtained by reacting diallyl malate with toluene diisocyanate in a molar ratio of 2:1. Suitable polythiols include esters formed from thiolcontaining carboxylic acids and polyhydroxy compounds; and reaction products of 1 mol of a hydantoin diol compound and two moles of mercapto-monocarboxylic acid. The wire which is coated may be, for example, of Cu, Al or steel, or of Cu clad with Ni, Al or stainless steel.
