Abstract
1465407 Valves; friction clutches; spring mechanisms; band brakes J H FITZWATER 5 Feb 1974 [9 Feb 1973] 05300/74 Headings F2V F2C F2E and F2S [Also in Division H2] An actuator for a valve 12 comprises an electric motor 36 coupled to the valve actuating shaft 24 by an electrically-operated clutch 124, and a spring 158 which is wound up when the valve is moved to an open position and which can return the valve to closed position on electrical failure disengaging the clutch. Motor output shaft 46 which is driven via gearing 40 has a flat spring 156 secured to and surrounding the end thereof and surrounding an end 148 of an actuator output shaft 82. On energization of a coil 126 simultaneously with energization of the motor an armature 138 is moved against springs 146 to cause the inclined surface 142 to force the spring 156 against the shaft end 148 and thus couple shafts 46, 82. One end of spring 158 is anchored in a slot 166 in the housing while the other is anchored in a slot 160 in a plate 84 fastened to the shaft 82. Output shaft 82 carries a shaft 71 having cams 64, 66 secured on its end and actuating electric switches 74, 72 which de-energize the motor at the end of a valve opening movement and operate a valve position indicating means respectively. The valve is held in actuated position on deenergization of the motor by a brake band 208 engaging a drum 214 on an extension 216 of the motor shaft. The band is released simultaneously with energization of the motor by a solenoid 174 which on energization pivots a lever 200 to in turn pivot against a spring bias 206, a plate 202, to which the ends of the band are secured.
