Abstract
1465053 Change-speed control LUCAS ELECTRICAL Ltd 12 Feb 1974 [20 Feb 1973] 8217/73 Heading F2D A control unit 16, selecting ratios in an automatic transmission on a motor vehicle, is controlled by a multi-bit digital input signal which it receives from a memory 10 in the form of a diode matrix having a number, e.g. sixteen, of first input lines 11a ... 11p, crossed by a similar number of second sets of input lines 12a ... 12p, each set 12 consisting of two separate lines with diodes, represented by dots, connected between the lines in a manner determined empirically in accordance with engine and transmission characteristics, the sets of lines being energized through decoders 14, 13 and analogue-digital converters 20, 18 by transducers 19, 17 responding respectively to engine parameters such as engine speed and throttle setting or intake depression. The decoder 14 operates to turn on one of sixteen sets of switches 15a ... 15p each of which connects one of the sets of lines 12a ... 12p to the control unit 16. For a given value of each of the two control parameters one of the lines 11 will be energized and one of the sets of switches 15 will connect one of the sets of lines 12 to the control unit 16, which will then operate to select the required gear ratio. Thus, for example, with a diode connection (dotted) representing 1 and no connection 0, 11a, 15a would produce a control signal 10, whilst 11b, 15p would produce 00.
