Abstract
146,489. Krupp Akt.-Ges., F. Nov. 4, 1916, [Convention date]. Ordnance, discharging by means external to breech mechanism.-Consists in providing gyroscopic fire-control apparatus with special means to correct the range angle of the gun when the shot is fired at or near the point of reversal of the rolling movement. Fig. 1 shows a firecontrol instrument mounted on a trainable. support A arranged at a transmitting station remote from the gun N<1>. The instrument com-- prises a sighting telescope B<1> stabilized by an electrically-driven gyroscope B mounted in a casing B<5>. The gyroscope and its casing are provided with contacts b<3>, b<4>, respectively, arranged in a circuit leading to the firing coil n<2> and controlled by a switch P. The range is set up at the transmitting station on a scale k<1> and communicated to a dial M at the gun by a transmitter J, and the gun is elevated until the dial N agrees with the dial M. The correction is applied by turning a hand-wheel F which is connected with the transmitter J through a clutch F<4> and differential gear i, i<2>. The movements to be imparted to the hand-wheel F are determined, by marks mounted on the instrument A as follows. The sighting telescope carries a depending arm B<2> having marks b<6>, b<7>, b<8> moving over rolling- angle scales a<5>, a<6>, a<7> fixed to the support A. Rockingly mounted on the support A is a segmental lack which is provided with a mark e<1> and geared with the hand-wheel F so as to follow the rolling movements of the mark b<8> up to the point of reversal. Meanwhile the casing B<5> of the gyroscope is turned through the same angle by gearing g<12>, b<9>, and the contacts b<3>, b<4> therefore occupy the same relative positions as the marks b<8>, e<1>. If the switch P is then closed, the gun will fire at the point of reversal of the roll and the gun will be at the correct angle to the horizontal plane at the instant of firing since the operation of the hand-wheel F has added or subtracted the angle of roll. If it is desired to fire just after the reversal on one side or the other of the swing, the marks e<3>, e<2>, which may be adjustable, are used in place of the mark e'. In order to use the apparotus for giving the advance ignition when firing as the gun passes througn its horizontal position, the clutch F<4> is disconnected and a second rocking sector D having a mark d<1> is moved by the hand-wheel F to follow the mark b<7> up to the outward limit of its swing, the ratio of gearing between D and B<5> being so chosen that the contacts b<3>, b<4> are then suitably spaced to produce the desired advance in the ignition.
