Abstract

1464847 Welding by pressure INST ELEKTROSVARKI IM EO PATONA AKAD NAUK UKRAIN SSR 6 Feb 1975 5194/75 Heading B3R [Also in Division G3] In a method of flash butt welding, workpieces are moved relatively towards each other with a continuous motion on which there is superimposed a reciprocating motion. The length of welding current pulses caused by the reciprocating movement is measured and compared with a predetermined value, any difference being used to adjust the relative movement imparted to the workpieces. As shown in Fig. 1, workpieces 1, 2 are held respectively in a fixed clamp 3 and a clamp 4 which can be moved by an hydraulic actuator 20. Welding current supplied over a mains transformer 5 is measured by a current transformer 6 connected through a pulse shaper 7 to one input of a comparator 15 which also receives an input representing a desired welding pulse length from an A.C. or pulse generator 17. The error signal from the comparator 15 may be supplied either to the continuous drive mechanism 18 or to the reciprocating drive mechanism 19, both of which are connected to the actuator 20. In the former case, the continuous drive speed is adjusted, while in the latter case the amplitude of the reciprocating motion is varied. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the pulse shaper 7 is connected to a relay switching device controlled by integrating and differentiating circuitry so as to produce a unidirectional voltage which can be compared with a constant voltage reference signal in order to produce a control signal for the drive mechanisms.
