Abstract

Supporting.-A search-light is directed by means of a cable-control device so that it may be operated from a distance by means of a lever, the angular movements of which are reproduced by the search-light. The search-light is supported by its trunnions in a cylindrical cradle 3 revolving on rollers 4 so that it may be rotated by pulleys 12 about the axis of the trunnions and also about the axis of the cradle, these axes being at right-angles to each other. Cables 6, 7 secured as at 8 to the cradle are passed over pulleys and round a grooved wheel 24 on an operating-device, Fig. 5; and an endless cable is passed over pulleys 12 round guide pulleys on the cradle and round pulleys 18 and 19 which are connected by cables 21 and 21<1> to a pulley 26 on the operating- device. By movement of a lever 27 which is directed, for example, at air-craft and which is keyed to the pulley 26, the spindle of which is secured in a fork attached to the end of a shaft 23 carrying the grooved wheel 24, a corresponding movement is given to the search-light. This lever may be provided with a telescope for sighting purposes. By suitable connexions, and to give the direction to an operator, the operating-device may be coupled to a listening-device, Fig. 7. By a similar system of pulleys and cables, a quadrant 29 having a circular boss 36 is caused to move in accordance with the movement of the listening- device and about the same centre as the lever 27, so that, by pointing the lever at the centre of the circular boss 26 the beam of the search-light will be caused to illuminate the aircraft, the direction of which is located by the listening-device.
