Abstract

1464510 Preparation of N,N-dialkylxylylenediamines PFIZER Inc 7 Aug 1975 [19 Aug 1974] 33084/75 Heading C2C N,N - Dialkylxylylenediamines of the formula are obtained by reducing an α-[N,N-(dialkyl)- amino]tolunitrile of the formula wherein R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are each (C 12 to C 20 ) alkyl groups, in an inert solvent, in the presence of a Raney Ni catalyst at a weight ratio of Raney Ni to tolunitrile in the range of 0À05 to 5À0 and NH 3 in a molar excess with respect to the tolunitrile, with H 2 at a pressure of 10 to 100 p.s.i.g., at a temperature of 0‹ to 50‹ C., until the reaction is complete. The preferred amount of NH 3 is 5 to 100 times the molar amount of the tolunitrile. The required product may be isolated as its dihydrochloride salt. Compounds of Formula II may be obtained by reacting an appropriate dialkylamine with α- bromotolunitrile in dimethylacetamide in the presence of K 2 CO 3 . The said dialkylamine may be obtained by refluxing an alkylamine with the appropriate alkanoic acid in a solvent and reducing the resulting N-alkylamide with sodium bis - (2 - methoxyethoxy)aluminium hydride in a solvent to give the required dialkylamine.
