Abstract

1464302 Wet-bulb temperature sensor WIRA 16 July 1975 [24 April 1974] 17842/74 Heading H1K [Also in Division G1] A sensing device for measuring wet-bulb temperatures comprises a block 1 of microporous or "foam" metal and electrical conductors 8, 9 for coupling the device to electrically-operated temperature indicating means, the conductors 8, 9 being coupled to the block 1 in such a way that in operation a potential is produced between the dependent upon the temperature of the block 1. When the block 1, which may be of stainless steel, is wetted its low thermal capacity, high surface area and high capillary attraction for water causes it to follow the wetbulb temperature of the atmosphere in which it is situated. The coupling of the conductors 8, 9 to the block 1 may be via a resistance thermometer or thermistor but in the preferred embodiments a thermocouple junction is employed. The conductors 8, 9 may be joined together to form a junction which is bonded to the block 1, preferably within a bore therein, but as shown one of the conductors 9 is of the same material as the block 1 and is bonded thereto at a location 10 spaced from that at which the thermocouple junction 5 is formed between the block 1 and the other conductor 8 of dissimilar material. In order to obtain a direct measure of the difference between wet-bulb and dry-bulb temperatures one of the conductors 8, 9 may include, spaced from the block 1, a temperature sensor of the same type as that associated with the block 1, connected so that the electrical outputs of the two sensors are in opposition.
