Compiling and tabulating statistics mechanically. - In machines for electrically registering and sorting perforated statistical cards, the currents for operating the counters when and as the' perforations permit are supplied by a magneto 28 driven by the machine in timed relation so as to produce current impulses only at the necessary instants. The presence of a card in the shoot deflects a lever 7 to close contacts 8, and a closure of contacts 10 by the cam 9 allows current from a source 11 to pass through wire 14 to relay switches 15 and 16. Switch 15 thereupon establishes an alternative circuit to the motor 32 by shunting the starting switch A. Switch 16 closes a circuit at 25 through cam-operated contacts 27 for counting the number of cards and also completes circuit at 24 for the magneto 28 rotated by the machine so as to send the impulses through the cards as they arrive in position between a plate 6 and brushes 4 connected with the counters by leads 2. The magneto shaft may have a cam 30 adapted to raise and lower a contact arm 31 so as to allow only the top of a current wave to pass.
